Features Of Linux Operating System

Many features of Linux operating systems vary based on your choice of distributor. There are some features, however, common to all distributions of Linux. One of the big advantages that Linux enjoys over Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS operating systems is that it is immune to executable viruses designed to attack the MS operating systems. This is not to say that a Linux system cannot be infected, of course--it is still susceptible to viruses in other file types, such as macros attached to documents.

When choosing which distribution of Linux to purchase and install, you should consider the included applications. Some distributions will include office productivity suites, internet browsers, and applications for media playback. While these are not difficult to acquire separately, a distribution that includes these applications will enable you to start using your Linux computer right away rather than seeking out essential programs and dealing with separate installations.

Rapid Development of New Versions of Linux

Because Linux is open source, most bugs you might encounter have already been reported by individual users in online communities. This allows solutions to be developed faster. Ultimately, through this collaboration Linux is made more reliable than other operating systems. For this reason, it is used by many companies that need to have computers operating consistently and reliably at all times.

It is crucial that security flaws be found in any system as early as possible, as anyone connected to the Internet is at risk when someone discovers a flaw in an operating system and sets about to exploit it with a virus or Trojan. While the rapid development of Linux allows users to upgrade their operating systems to fix vulnerabilities, it also means that new versions are likely to be released while they still have bugs which could make them vulnerable. Solutions are quickly developed, however--sometimes within hours of being reported--so you can minimize your system's weaknesses much faster than you would with an operating system that requires you to wait for a large patch to be developed while your system remains at risk.
