IP telephony is also known as Voice-over IP (VoIP). Very briefly, IP telephony is the transmission of telephone calls over a data network. Unlike traditional telephone systems, which use circuit switching, IP telephony uses a different means, called packet switching.

In essence, packet switching sends "packets" of data from one computer system to another. The advantage of this method is that it uses far less data and energy than circuit switching. The result is a more rapid and efficient network over which to transmit information.

By extension, a more efficient network means that more communication can take place in any given space and time. This, of course, has been a boon for businesses. With leaps in telephone and voice technology, business can be conducted in less time and accomplish more than ever before.

The flip side of technological advances is that once they're made, they don't just stop there. They keep advancing. That's why, to remain successful, every business needs to establish a relationship with a good network maintenance and consulting firm. Network consulting services help businesses stay in step with the march of technology.
