Entertainment Today

There are more entertainment choices today than there have ever been in the history of the human race. Americans watch literally hundreds of different cable and pay-per-view channels from the comfort of their living rooms. In addition, they instantly access hundreds of radio stations via the Internet or via XM or Sirius satellite radio. Furthermore, easy to use DVD and CD delivery services have made access to music and movies a snap.

The culture of entertainment has even impacted other societal institutions. "Infotainment," which is the stepchild of factual news and entertainment, has expanded like wildfire. Radio talk shows, newspaper columnists, and comedians have all taken on hybrid roles as purveyors of truth and entertainment. As a result, it can be difficult to know where to draw the line between opinion and fact.

For Your Entertainment Today

Perhaps the most exciting movement happening in entertainment today is the expansion of the American comedic palette. Thanks to groundbreaking series like The Simpsons, Arrested Development, and The Office, American humor has reached a new apex of sophistication. Moreover, this sophistication has helped to inspire other entertainment genres to strive for self-improvement.

Another curious phenomenon related to entertainment today is what is commonly known as Reality Television. This ever-burgeoning genre pits real-life contestants against one another in contests of skill, finesse and romance. While some industry analysts predict that the Reality TV bubble has popped, high ratings for Reality TV shows, such as American Idol, point to the opposite conclusion.
