Within the Orange County of California can be found the country's largest and best-known planned community, Irvine. The area was once a ranch where cattle and sheep once grazed, but in the late 1800's, James Irvine began switching from ranching to farming. In the early 1900's, residential and business activities began to form and take shape, and by 1970 the Irvine Co. announced that it would turn 43 acres of undeveloped land surrounding the area into a master-planned community.

Irvine incorporated into a city in 1971, and became the fastest growing city between 1970 and 1980. The University of California Irvine was created in 1960, attracting both local and outside students into the area and establishing a college business and recreational feel to the city. Because of the growth and youthful vigor, the city has been famed for very regulated residential areas, beautiful parks, trails, and recreational children's programs.
