Contemporary Handmade Area Rugs

Written by Erin Powell

Handmade rugs have been prized for centuries as the art form that they are. The most sought after handmade rugs in the world were, and still are, actually tribal or ethnic rugs, intended for practical everyday use, and created in the same way, using the same patterns for generations. Examples of these rugs can be found for sale all over the world now, and they are classified as contemporary because they fit so well into the contemporary interior design concept.

Contemporary Meets Traditional

Although this might sound a little incongruous, in fact it's not. Contemporary interior design is distinguished by its fundamental simplicity and clean, sleek lines. Traditional rug designs typically feature simple color schemes and geometric patterns.

To meet the need for clean lines and simplicity, rug makers making handmade rugs now also produce contemporary designs that do not have an ethnic background. The most prized of these are those that are designed by an artist of note, or a professional designer. Rugs that have been designed by well known designers in other fields have also become a trend.

Because some of today's contemporary rug designs are so plain, they can't be said to follow any kind of tradition or trend. Some are simple solid color affairs, maybe with a small, logo-style design in one small area. In fact, it's even possible to commission a handmade rug in any kind of contemporary design you have in mind. Any kind of rug, whether old or new, can be regarded as an investment if it's hand-knotted. The rug you buy today will be tomorrow's heirloom.
