Unfortunately, a free online college degree is not going to be easy to come by. Even with federal funding, schools have to make money in order to keep their doors open. Professors must get paid, systems must be maintained, and programs must be developed. There are ways, however, in which you can earn a virtually free online college degree.

How to Make a Free Online College Degree a Reality

The only true way you'll ever earn a free online college degree is to get someone else to pay for it. You can do this a number of ways. The best way is to earn college scholarships. Scholarships are given by the government or businesses to qualified and needy students. Scholarships can be awarded on a needs basis or a merit basis. People belonging to certain groups or organizations often qualify for special scholarships.

Grants are similar to scholarships in that they do not have to be paid back. Grants are free money the government awards to students generally on a "need" basis. Depending on your income, the government can award grants to needy students to pay for college. Pell grants are one of the most common and you can find lots of information on these and other types of grants on college or government websites.

Student loans are another way to pay for college without having to pay yourself. This is not a one hundred percent free online college degree because student loans must be paid back after graduation. Some types of loans accrue interest while you're in school, others do not. Your schools financial aid office can tell you which you qualify for and help you locate other sources of funding.
