To effectively maintain good reading and writing skills in a student, one must also teach spelling to her. Although many children do not look upon spelling as a fun subject to learn, some teachers are able to make it fun and entertaining. Plus, with all the quality educational tools now available, there is no excuse not to make spelling a joyous part of the learning process.

One of the most popular ways to teach spelling to small children is through phonics training. By teaching the letters of the alphabet and simple words through voice and sound patterns, the child is more adapt at recognizing word structure. Repetition of simple words and their spellings reinforce good spelling habits and create a great basis for elementary spelling levels.

How to Teach Spelling at Home

As the current state of spelling education becomes less and less important to public schools, there is an increasing trend of home schooling plans being put into effect. Parents are more likely nowadays to provide a supplemental strategy to teach reading and spelling. Or, they may choose to remove the child from formal school altogether and perform the educational process themselves.

There are a lot of ways to teach grammar and spelling from home. Many publishing companies provide easy spelling materials to teach through, including games to workbook drills and phonic audio aids. Some even include high-tech tools like CD-ROMS to make the learning process interactive, visual and a lot of fun.
