The future of the medical transcription business is one of the brightest and busiest. Until doctor's handwriting gets better, or until the use of audio dictation becomes defunct, medical offices will need qualified and trained transcriptionists to help them organize and process all of their reports. And, as long as there are still health care, surgeries, and doctor's visits, these reports will be created.

There are two types of medical transcription business types - staffed and freelance. A hospital can staff a large group of MT's at it's own facility, paying them an hourly rate to sit at a comfortable desk and type out dictation on transcribing machines owned by the hospital itself. This work has very little hazards associated with it, although a staff MT should make sure they handle medical problems due to long sitting hours, carpal tunnel syndrome, and taking care of one's eyesight from prolonged computer viewing.

Taking the Medical Transcription Business Home With You

As technology and the Internet has improved over the years, an increasing number of medical transcriptionists have decided to create home-based offices. They become employees or subcontractors in freelanced work for hospitals and transcription services, or as self-employed independent contractors themselves. Many become employers of their own temporary or on-call transcription business, sending work to other MT's who are looking for part-time, full-time, or irregularly-houred work.
