Many students who enjoy creative writing often earn four-year college degrees in English, journalism and other language arts programs. Excellent writing skills open the door to a number of different career choices. If you enjoy creative writing, you may be able to turn your passion into money for college. There are several creative writing scholarships and contests for high school students and adults alike.

If you enjoy creative writing, but you didn't earn the best grades in high school, you can still earn money for college by participating in essay writing contests. If you didn't get accepted to the best school in the country, you may actually find that smaller, lesser known schools offer more scholarship money and financial aid than the larger, more competitive schools.

Use Your Writing Skills to Earn Money for School

If you want to participate in an intensive writing program, you can enter the Interlochen Creative Writing Contest. This essay contest is open to high school students who want to participate in an intensive creative writing program at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. The winner receives a $25,000 scholarship, applicable to study at the center. Runners-up also receive scholarship money to attend the program. Interlochen is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing young, creative minds.

Many schools offer scholarships and writing contest through their English departments. Cleveland State University sponsors a creative writing contest with a $3,000 tuition scholarship award. You can also find several scholarships and contest from private organizations and members of the community. For example, there's a writing contest called "Let's Get Creative." It's a short story writing contest open to high school seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students. The winner receives $1,000, and his or her short story is published online.
