A number of organizations award free scholarships for college. You need not have flawless grades or perfect test scores to qualify, and you don't have to come from an under-represented background or community. Although these characteristics may be helpful, there truly is something for everyone; with the right search strategy, it is possible for every student to find a competitive scholarship offer.

When it comes to finding a scholarship, they key is to give yourself an edge over the competition in whatever way possible. Some estimates suggest that there are as many as 15 million students looking for educational aid each year. You must distinguish yourself from the competition early on. This means honing in on the programs for which you have the best shot. There are thousands of programs out there and you can waste a good deal of time pursuing things for which you have little chance.

Under Your Nose

One of the best ways to find a free scholarship is to search locally. Businesses, churches, civic organizations, and other small groups are all excellent starting places. These resources are likely to offer an array of scholarship opportunities specifically designed for local students. Moreover, they are likely to be less publicized compared to major national awards and therefore less competitive.

You can also look for scholarships that award a specific strength or skill you possess. Perhaps you have mentored a young child, performed large quantities of community service, or excelled in athletics. Play to your strengths and you are likely to have the best shot at securing a free scholarship.
