Military Scholarships

Military scholarships are available through a number of federal and private programs. These awards can be used for individuals who are active members of the Armed Forces as well as for those who are dependents of war veterans. Anyone considering a tour of duty should consider the academic benefits that come with military service. There is substantial sacrifice involved, but for many families, the long-term payoff proves well worth it.

The U.S. Military offers several ways to secure funding for higher education. The most common is the Montgomery G.I. Bill, which gives monetary incentives for active duty in any branch of the military. This includes the Air Force and the Coast Guard in addition to troops such as the Army and the Marines. The bill provides for as many as three years of educational benefits that may be cashed in either during or after service.

A Smooth Start

Other military scholarships provide tuition assistance. In particular, those who have served in the military may enroll in accredited colleges with full tuition coverage up to $4,500. This is an ideal way to pursue a high school GED or to begin a higher education program.

These programs truly are the tip of the iceberg. Between ROTC programs, military community colleges, and Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOCs), there are ample resources to put college within reach. If you are willing to serve a full term in the U.S. Military, these are ideal opportunities to secure college funding.
