Minority Scholarships

The best way to find minority scholarships is to employ a multi-pronged approach that relies on a variety of search techniques. It requires more work at the outset, but a strategy that approaches the search process from multiple directions is much more likely to be successful. Think carefully about all of the programs for which you might be eligible and be prepared to submit several applications.

There are literally thousands of minority scholarships out there. The legitimate ones have no application fees, which means that for the mere cost of postage stamps, you can apply to as many as you wish. Smart students take advantage of this and apply to as many programs as possible. In a highly competitive market, applying to multiple programs substantially improves your chances of securing funding.

Improving Your Odds

At the same time, you don't want to fritter your efforts on programs that are likely to prove useless. Thus, you should do your best to narrow your search by thinking about the categories in which you will be most competitive. Some minority scholarships are quite general and apply to a large number of under-represented groups; others are very specific and target key ethnic groups. It may be worthwhile to apply to fewer programs, but to focus on the scholarship programs in which your record is likely to stand out the most.

In addition, you may want to consider applying for programs that encourage minorities to pursue specific educational paths. Millennium scholarships, for example, are designed to encourage minority students to pursue higher education in the sciences. If your interests make you strong candidate for a specialized career, consider applying to programs that emphasize specific areas of interest.
