The Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is an association of entities involved in the information technology (IT) industry. According to CompTIA, in 22 years the association has grown to over 20,000 members with a strong worldwide presence. The association is headquartered in Chicago, IL but has offices located in cities throughout the world including Tokyo and Sao Paulo.

The mission of the CompTIA is very simple, to grow the IT industry. The association uses a selection of techniques to accomplish this task; mainly they create industry standards and initiatives dedicated to the IT industry. Recognizing the different needs of its members, CompTIA has broken down their members into IT industry segments. By segmenting its membership, CompTIA created the ability to focus on the specific needs of each industry segment.

Using Training and Education as a Tool

CompTIA uses education and certification training as a tool to expand the IT industry. Their goal is to develop resources and standards that foster education and career advancement for IT professionals. The organization has broken down training programs into two segments, IT educators and professionals. Many organizations are starting to require IT professionals to have CompTIA certification as a requirement for employment.

To achieve the organization's goal of providing quality education for IT professionals, CompTIA has created an alliance with various education providers. The program is the CompTIA Learning Alliance (CLA) and is a global network intended to create and maintain standards in certification education. Training organizations in the alliance are required to follow approved curriculum for their classes as well as utilize certified instructors.
