Judging by the direction that most telecommunication technologies are going, IP telephones are here to stay. While not every company in the world has made the transition, many businesses have decided to take advantage of all the benefits IP telephony has to offer. They choose to sacrifice the time and effort it takes to install a brand new system for the competitive effectiveness of IP technology.

The basic principle behind all IP telephones is to use a network to carry the human voice across one platform to the next. Digital packets of data rather than electrical currents travel through LAN lines from the microphone to the receiver. Outside analog signals pass through a gateway and are converted into data readable by the entire network, while internal transmissions are interchanged easily from one IP phone to the next.

The advantages of this type of system are many, especially if you are building a brand new office environment. Because IP telephones utilize the same line as an internet connection, the building manager does not have to install two separate sets of wiring. IP telephony also has the ability to integrate a number of different communication mediums, such as voice mail, email, faxes and PC messages, together into one system.

IP Telephones Increase Accessibility

Another great benefit to IP phones is that they are capable of accessing a number of email servers, database directories and a number of other integrated sources of information. Many IP telephones can also be extended to any system routed to an IP packet. This makes it possible to add extensions at workers' homes and to the hotel rooms of any employees traveling on business.
