Formerly called Formosa, which is Portugese for "beautiful island," this island nation is now named Taiwan which is Chinese for "terraced bay." Home to some of the largest and oldest trees in the world, Taiwan was settled by aborigines around 6,000 years ago. The original inhabitants of Taiwan were the same people who colonized most of the Pacific Islands.

Finding the best Taiwan phone cards is as easy as spending just a few minutes perusing two or three phone card vendor websites. With very little effort, you can check out the rates, features, and benefits of several cards and can determine which card best meets your specific needs. In order to make the best choice, you should look at the following areas before you buy.

First of all, you should know that the per minute charge is only one factor when it comes to the ultimate cost of your calls. Another factor is whether the card you buy requires payment of additional fees. For example, some cards with very attractive per minute costs also charge you a connect fee on each call and, possibly, a weekly or monthly maintenance fee. Many cards come with a limited amount of time to use all your minutes once you activate the card, and any unused minutes at the expiration date are simply lost.

Some of the Best Taiwan Phone Cards

You can get Taiwan cards that actually cost as little as $.021 per minute that come with no connection fee, three minute rounding, and a $.49 maintenance fee charged twice a month. Note that calling a cell phone increases the cost of each call. Find a card that comes with one minute rounding or less because that will save you both money and minutes on each call. Cards generally come in $5, $10, and $20 increments. If you plan to call Taiwan over an extended period of time, you should look for cards that have higher per minute rates and no other fees. Generally, stated rates are those in effect when you are calling from the continental US.
