Metal cases are generally more impact-resistant, and can withstand greater temperature extremes than plastic. Metal cases are also less likely to transmit gasses, can better withstand autoclaving, and, if deep-drawn, have no seams where bacteria might collect. Finally, aluminum offers protection against EMI/RFI emissions, whereas plastic has to be coated with a shielding substance.

Another question to ask yourself concerns the intended use of the case. Do you need to ship tissue samples to the CDC from Alaska? Will the equipment be hand carried around town to serve multiple facilities? Or maybe you're a manufacturer of medical equipment, and have to take it on the road constantly to trade shows. Beware if false economies when considering this question. The more travel stress your equipment is expected to endure, the more you need to invest in your medical equipment cases.
