If you've ever shopped for a cordless phone, you've likely seen the label "900 MHz" prominently displayed. This label refers to the radio frequency that the phone uses to send and receive messages. Higher frequencies mean less static, line crossover, and call dropping, but they also mean exposure to higher levels of electromagnetic radiation.

Best of Both Worlds

Cordless phones have evolved considerably over the past two decades. A far cry from those clunky, unreliable behemoths we lugged around in the beginning, today's cordless phone is lighter, faster, and infinitely more reliable. This improved technology is due, in large part, to the higher radio frequencies employed in newer phones. Although 900 MHz is perhaps the most standard phone model, newer lines boast frequencies of up to 2.7GHz.

Most consumers evaluate this information based on what it means for phone performance. After all, higher frequencies mean more secure phone lines and fewer hassles with static and the like. However, there are a number of other variables to consider when choosing a phone, including the potential health risks it carries.

The higher the frequency of your phone, the higher the level of radiation it emits. Although scientists are unclear on how this radiation affects humans, it is clear that high levels of radiation are extremely damaging. If you want to get the best of both worlds, consider using a high frequency phone with a radiation shield that guards the antenna and keeps emissions away from the head.
