If you have ever wondered what all of those cordless phone frequencies are about, you're not alone. When shopping for a cordless, most people devote their time and energy to exploring the perks and features of various phone models. What they don't realize, however, is that phone quality is often directly related to phone frequency.

What's Your Number?

Every cordless phone comes with a frequency number posted prominently on the box. The number refers to the radio frequency the phone uses to transmit messages. In the olden days, analog models employed frequencies as low as 1.7 MHz. These days, however, 900MHz is the norm. Mind you, that is for a standard model; top-of-the-line phones often have MHz ratings well above this level.

As wavelength frequency increases, so does the quality of the phone. Higher phone frequency ensures less static and less frequent call dropping. It is basically considered to provide a more secure and stable phone line. At the same time, increased frequency also means increased exposure to EMF radiation emissions.

Although these emissions are thought to be quite small, it makes sense to consider some basic safety precautions. Hands-free phone options (e.g., speakerphone) as well as radiation shields that may be attached to the phone are likely your best bets. There are plenty of options out there, and with just a bit of legwork, it should be easy to enjoy the benefits of a secure phone line without the associated health risks.
