The DNC List, (Do Not Call List), is the result of thousands of households complaining about unwanted phone calls by telemarketers in their homes. The Federal government decided to do something about this by creating the National Do Not Call List for consumers who wish to have their phone numbers protected from telemarketers. Let's look at how this process works.

In order to get your phone number of this list, you must first register, either by phone or online. The phone number to call to register your number is 1-888-382-1222 (TTY is 1-866-290-4236). To visit the website you can log onto WWW.DONOTCALL.GOV, and register your phone number there.

Stop Telemarketers from Calling with the DNC List

Keep in mind that once you register your phone number, it takes three months for it to go into affect. In addition, it will not stop all telemarketing calls from being placed to your home. Non-profit organizations and businesses with whom you have a standing relationship may still call your home without being penalized. Long-distance phone companies and insurance companies can still call your home as well without getting penalized.

You can register up to three numbers at one time, and these numbers will stay on the registry for five years. At any point, you can have these phone numbers removed from the list if you choose. Finally, you can also have your wireless phone numbers registered on the DNC list to keep unwanted calls at bay.
