Do Not Call numbers are phone numbers placed on a list by consumers who do not wish to be contacted by phone in their homes. In order to get your number on this DNC list, you must first register. Registration is by phone or via their website, and can be completed in a few minutes.

To register by phone, simply dial the toll-free number 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number you wish to register. If you have a computer and Internet access, you can visit WWW.DONOTCALL.GOV, and register your phone number this way. You can register up to three Do Not Call numbers at one time on this list.

How Do Not Call Numbers Work

Once you register your phone number, it will take three months for it to go into affect. This means that you can still expect to receive phone calls from telemarketers during this time. However, once this three month waiting time has expired, you should notice a tremendous difference in the amount of solicitations you receive at home.

If you still receive unwanted phone calls after the three months, you can file a formal complaint, and the telemarketer is in jeopardy of paying an $11,000 fee per offense. All telemarketers need to identify who they are and what company they are calling for when they dial your phone number. Remember that non-profit organizations, long-distance phone companies, insurance companies, and companies you presently do business with are exempt from this new law.
