Memory Modules

Memory modules are often confused in computer terms with the functions of the hard drive. The hard drive of a computer is meant to hold files and programs in permanent storage. When these files or programs are accessed, this is where memory modules come into play.

The Functions of Memory Modules

Memory modules are what we are talking about when we refer to a computer's RAM. RAM stands for, "Random Access Memory." Think of RAM, or a computer's memory as a temporary storage type of work space for your computer. When you access a program or file, it takes that program or file out of hard drive storage and dumps it into your computer's RAM memory. Now that it is here, you can work with it to actually use the program or modify the file.

To put this concept in simpler terms, think of RAM or a memory module as a desktop, and the hard drive as the file cabinet. When you need to do some paperwork, you go to the file cabinet where it is stored to get it. You then take the specific paperwork you want to work on and put it on top of your desk. The bigger your desk, the more paperwork you can do at any given time.

The size of a memory module can be compared to the size of a desktop. The more RAM a computer has, the more space you have to work with. This means you can open more programs and files and work with them when you have more memory. When you're done and you close the program or file, that program or file is taken out of your way and put back in the file cabinet (hard drive).
