Printed circuit boards (PCBs) run the gamut from incredibly simple to puzzlingly complex. Depending on the functionality of the final product, a circuit board can assume any degree of complexity, thickness or size. By carefully planning your own electronic device and assessing the variables that differ between circuit boards, you can determine what type of PCB would best suit your needs.

PCB Comparisons

As you plan your schematics, you may determine that a multilayered board would best serve your device. These boards allow current flow at internal layers, and can even reduce the overall size of your device, if they are planned efficiently. While multilayered PCBs can be difficult to produce by yourself, they can easily be manufactured by dedicated circuit board fabrication companies.

Another factor to take into consideration when plotting out a PCB is the board's size. Remember, the board will likely need to be placed inside a casing of some sort; if it is too large, the PCB will be inefficient and awkward. Size efficiency is key not just for convenience; size can also greatly affect the price of PCB fabrication.

As you create your device, you may realize that you only need one side to contain a functioning circuit. You may be able to render a more efficient circuit (and save yourself a few pennies) by using a single side of a PCB. Many board fabrication companies will render these boards by taking a two-sided template and etching off an entire side.
