If you are preparing schematics to send into a company in order to fabricate a printed circuit board (PCB) for your electronics device, there are some precautions you can take to ensure that you get what you expect. PCBs contain fine, detailed structures that necessitate a great degree of planning and forethought before implementation. To ease the process, there are a few tips that can ensure the smooth execution of your circuit board.

Tips on Designing PCBs for External Fabrication

If you are preparing a multilayer board, ensure that each layer is clearly labeled, so that it ends up in the correct place on the board. If you are using a computer-aided design (CAD) application to prepare your boards, name the individual design files with the layer name. Check with the fabrication company's labeling criteria; they may require a particular file format or naming convention.

If you are using an advanced CAD program to design your board, use its testing features to determine the success of the design. Some CAD programs will allow a user to simulate a real-world trial of a circuit board and its components. In these applications, you can test current flow, heat emanation, and various other vital factors.

Finally--though this may seem obvious--check your work. Then double-check it. Even with the aid of computers, it is incredibly easy to make an error while designing a circuit board. The number of steps required to create the board combined with the large number of individual components on a board can create ample room for errors. The last thing you'd want is for your 100-ohm resistor to be labeled as a 10,000-ohm resistor. By checking your work, you ensure that your board will garner success and function properly.
