Designing a printed circuit board (PCB) for an electronics device can be an incredibly rewarding undertaking. The sheer complexity of some boards, though, renders the task a daunting one for some prospective designers. Thankfully, there exist numerous design templates and educational kits for learning about the functionality of PCBs and their systems.

Finding PCB Designs

The majority of large electronic circuits are composed of smaller building blocks, or modules. These modules might perform a specific function: amplification, perhaps, or current regulation. By becoming familiar with these building blocks and integrating them into a larger system, a designer can create complex electronics systems that perform many functions.

It is possible to learn the functionality of some of these modules by examining simple printed circuit board designs. If you want to learn what a particular component does or group of components do, simply follow the pathway of the current from its source (likely a battery) through the component, and back to the other end of the current source. Make a note of other components that are connected along the way, as these will influence the performance of the components in question.

If you are looking for a module that will perform a particular function, you can find such resources on the Internet or electronics reference books. You can likely lift the model directly and incorporate it into your own PCB design. As you do this, make sure that you account for proper current flow to the module; otherwise you run the risk of insufficient power to run the module or--conversely--excessive current that will fry the components.
