A good video card is an essential component in any high-performance computer. Most people don't realize how important video cards are to their computers. Without a good video card, you would have major problems doing things like playing high-resolution games and watching DVD movies.

Video cards are responsible for everything you see on your computer's screen. If you've ever experienced sluggish performance like windows that appear to close very slowly or desktop backgrounds that seem to re-draw in front of your eyes, the culprit is probably your video card. The good news is that upgrading video cards can be inexpensive and easy.

Choosing a New Video Card

As important as video cards are for good performance, the average computer user doesn't always need to buy a top-of-the-line card. If you're not a heavy gamer or graphic designer, you can safely buy a medium-priced video card for your computer. It will give you enough power to perform common tasks quickly and to watch DVDs and downloaded movies.

For gamers and CAD users, accelerated 3D video cards are an absolute necessity. These cards come with special processors that are designed to render 3D graphics quickly and crisply. Some of them will even allow you to plug in multiple monitors, which can be a great way to expand the size of your desktop.
