One of the most exciting breakthroughs in modern technology is the advent of GPS navigation systems. GPS units allow people to know precisely where they are at all times, anywhere on the planet. These units can be as small as a wristwatch, or they can be large and easy-to-read dashboard units in automobiles.

The acronym GPS is short for "global positioning system." This is a technology that involves the use of 28 satellites that are tracking at a height of 12,000 feet. These satellites are constantly emitting signals that are picked up by GPS units, for a continuous signal giving data for both position and time.

GPS Navigation Systems Are Exciting Technology

These satellites are government-owned, and the system was developed by the Department of Defense to enhance military navigation and strategic maneuvers. However, technology that was developed for government use has quickly been applied to a number of exciting civilian pastimes. GPS units are now used for hunting, fishing, aviation, boating, hiking, treasure-hunting, and almost any outdoor adventure activity that can be named.

GPS units can give remarkable accuracy, but tend to need a "line of sight" between the receiving unit and the satellites. This means they may not work in caves or dense underbrush. Modern adventurers use global positioning systems that are backed up with compass and map, if they are going to be doing some serious wilderness exploration.

More and more people are making the time and effort to get out of doors. We are spending our weekends and vacations hiking, camping, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. This increasing interest in outdoor activity is, in large part, due to the increased freedom offered by GPS technology.

GPS Units Can Mean Safety and Success

GPS units allow the user to enter destination coordinates and then to receive direction and distance to the "mark." In the wilderness, a good GPS unit can be the difference between safety and danger, between a successful outing and disaster. All adventure comes with risk, but with GPS navigation systems it's possible to minimize the risk of getting lost.

GPS units come with manuals that are essential to helping the user learn to effectively leverage the power of the unit. Some companies, like Garmin, even make videos. Some of the functions of GPS navigation systems can include position, direction, speed, altitude, estimated time of arrival, and much more.

Extreme sports and wilderness excursions are becoming increasingly popular with the public. These outings are made possible by GPS navigation systems. Areas that used to be off-limits to all but the most intrepid explorers are now able to be enjoyed by people in good health and with a delight in the extraordinary.
