If you are looking for an all-in-one, multi-purpose handheld GPS unit, the Garmin Gpsmap 60c and Gpsmap 60cs are probably where you should start, and most likely where you'll end up. Raising the bar for personal GPS yet again, Garmin has targeted a wide audience with these units. Everyone from environmental professionals to geocaching enthusiasts will find these units useful.

In designing the Gpsmap 60cs, it would seem that Garmin must have asked how they could fit all the best features of handheld GPS into one lightweight, rugged, and waterproof unit. They started with a WAAS enabled GPS receiver, which is accurate to 10 feet in North America, then added a 256 color, transreflective TFT display that is easy to read in almost any condition. An electronic compass, barometric altimeter, and a whopping 56 megabytes of memory for storing map detail give this unit accuracy, functionality and flexibility to match.

The Gpsmap 60cs: Features for Any Outdoor Endeavor

Piled on top of the solid basic features are a whole host of others that will suit the needs of just about any outdoor recreationist or urban adventurer. The integrated Outdoor Calendar can provide you with the best hunting and fishing times, while the faster processor makes possible turn-by-turn city street directions using the CitySelect optional software. Compatibility with both Bluechart and U.S. Topo means both hikers and sailors will can have the maps they need at their fingertips.

With so many features, the ability to configure the Gpsmap 60cs personally to each user is a must, and Garmin delivers. And even with the color console, battery life is reasonable, delivering 20 hours of typical use on two AA's. The unit weighs in at just under 7.5 ounces with batteries, ensuring that you will never leave it behind.
