Self Checkout Machines

Self checkout machines are sometimes known as self service kiosks. Computer kiosks, like interactive multimedia kiosks or simple transactional kiosks, were first created in 1982. In the decades since their creation, self checkout machines, check in machines, vending machines and other kiosks have become a staple of airlines, restaurants, grocery stores, movie theaters, retail shops and so on.

Self Checkout Machines and Successful Businesses

Some of the most successful businesses in America use self checkout machines. After all, self service kiosks are not only good for the customer, they're good for the retailer. Retailers and merchants can hire fewer people to work the checkout when they have machines performing this task, as well.

Fewer people behind cash registers can mean one of two things: fewer employees, or more employees on the floor. Figure out which your business needs more, and act accordingly. Personally, when I'm in a gigantic hardware store or grocery store, and no one is around to help me find an item I need, I don't go back to that store. I would rather visit a small hardware store and risk them not having what I need, than visit a hardware giant, and feel lost and ignored.

If you want, you can even program your kiosk software to ask the customer if he had help finding everything he needed during his visit. Before checking out, the customer can fill out a very short (one or two questions at the most) questionnaire. Since these questions are being asked digitally, the response will already be digitized, and ready to go into a useful data base.
