VoIP phone systems, which rely on voice over IP transmissions, are rapidly becoming the industry standard for many offices. Currently, VoIP is considered an "emerging" technology, for its rollout has been limited. While a host of early adopters have extolled its merits, too many folks remain in the dark about its ins and outs or are simply scared off by the prospect of trying to understand it.

The truth is that, conceptually, VoIP phone systems couldn't be easier to understand. In short, the analog signals you use when speaking via a regular telephone are converted into digital signals, much the way they are with cordless phones. Only now, instead of sending those digital signals through your phone wires, you have the option of sending them through your internet connection. You may have safety concerns about the security and availability of a provider's connection; however, there are some simple things to look for when selecting a VoIP provider.

Security and Availability Issues

Some business owners may feel nervous about entrusting all their communications to an internet connection. What happens if the network goes down and that connection is unavailable? The old saying about "putting all of one's eggs in one basket" comes to mind. However, enterprise class VoIP solution providers have already found ways around this dilemma.

When selecting a provider, find out how many data centers are in their network. If they only have one, move on. One center isn't enough to ensure continuous, uninterrupted service. You need to find a provider with two data centers so that if anything should happen to one, the other will remain functional. How secure has the provider made these data centers? Can they withstand earthquakes, floods, or other natural disasters? Also, look for a high level of redundancy between these centers. You don't want to lose important data because information isn't transferred between a provider's data centers in a timely manner. If a data center uses redundant connections from separate carriers, you can be sure your data will make it through.
