An electrophoresis power supply automates the electrophoresis process by testing and comparing the reactions of particles when examined with a variety of gels. Each of the several gels used with these devices contains certain properties designed to provoke specific reactions from particles bearing certain characteristics. These reactions include the initial acceleration rate, direction, and speed of movement. When the reactions of the particles are observed in the gel, their properties are then revealed by the results of their interaction.

The three variables that an electrophoresis power supply measures, monitors, and regulates are voltage, power level, and current. The device is equipped with three gauges that correspond to these variables. This type of power supply can then run in constant mode for any or all of these variables throughout the length of the interaction. Dials located below the gauges can be adjusted to increase or decrease the electrical flow.

Applications of an Electrophoresis Power Supply

The fields of medicine and science provide many uses for these power supplies, as they are needed when working with microscopic subjects, such as germs, viruses, protein, and other sub-cellular organisms. Different types of gels provoke different reactions, depending on the characteristics of the particle in question. This is why an electrophoresis power supply automates the process, running the particles through a variety of gels in a short length of time.

For example, proteins are examined using a charged detergent, which equalizes the surface and automatically sorts the particles by size. This results in the classification and determination of protein sizes within a single gel. Another gel might instigate a reaction that sorts the particles by charge, allowing for a cross-comparison of the particle's reaction to all of the gels, which illuminates the specific properties of each particle.
