The global positioning system (GPS) is an electronic system used for global navigation. Using a group of several dozen satellites, GPS can track the movement on nearly anything on the planet, after determining the exact location of the person or object. The system can also provide a highly accurate time reference for plotting the course of a moving object once it has been located. Although the technology has numerous military and industrial applications, its most common use among civilians is as part of a GPS navigation system used in cars.

GPS technologies, as well as the network of satellites used to maintain it, were developed by the U.S. Department of Defense in the late 1970s. Although it was initially created for military purposes, GPS is freely available to everyone. As a result, private companies began to develop practical applications for the technology, GPC navigation systems being one of the most popular. When a car is fitted with a GPS receiver, it sends out a signal, which is bounced off the network of satellites. By calculating the movement of these signals, the satellites can determine the location of the car, and relay the information back to the receiver.

Types Of GPS Navigation Systems

As the technology evolves, GPS systems are becoming easier to integrate into a variety of devices. No longer restricted to cars, GPS navigation systems can now be found in cell phones, watches, and stand-alone GPS devices. These items continue expand the benefits of the navigation system.

GPS systems are now used for the navigation of automobiles, ships, and even some aircraft. In addition, the technology is also utilized by hikers, mountain climbers, and campers. This technology, originally intended for military use, has proven to meet a wide variety of needs, and its usefulness continues to expand.
