Cable ResourcesWritten by Serena Berger There are many different types of audio and video cables available on the market today. Additionally, there is a substantial amount of variation in the prices of these products, from brand name to generic. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to assess whether the additional cost that you are going to incur is paying for the brand name or for the quality of the cable. You can see a lot of fluctuation in the prices for the same product, and it can be difficult to tell if or how one brand is far superior to another. Do Your Homework before Buying Cables Most audio and video devices have a series of connections so that you can decide which to use. If you go to a retail store, the employees can often be a very useful resource in helping you make this decision. You may also want to consult reviews online or in audio and video magazines, as they are based on extensive testing that you will not be able to conduct while standing in the store. Furthermore, they are usually unbiased, which is an advantage over most retail outlets and (obviously) advertisements. If you have friends with home theater systems, you should use them as a resource, as you can experience the audio and video quality that their cables are able to produce. Realize that the purpose of cables is to transmit a signal from one device to another with as little loss and interference as possible. Cables will not make your equipment any better than it is intrinsically, but good cables will let the speakers and television (the recipients of the signals) perform at their best.
