Home Theater Speaker Packages

Some people would like to shop around and try different combinations of speakers to construct a home theater system. They may like one company's subwoofer, but prefer another company's satellite speakers because each offers a particular nuance of sound. There is nothing to say that speakers must go together just because they are from the same manufacturer or a dealer tells you they go together--your own sound preference should always dictate what you buy.

If you don't really care whether you can hear a guitarist's fingers moving on the fret board of an acoustic guitar (or if you find it distracting), or if you don't have the time or the money to do extensive comparison shopping, you can opt for a home theater speaker package. It's often a lot cheaper to get a speaker package than it would be to get the individual speakers separately. You may also have more options for sizes of speakers that fit perfectly in your space.

Surround Sound Home Theater Packages

If your passion is for movies and television, it's almost certain that you would rather have a surround sound speaker system than two extremely high quality front speakers. For the same price, you can get two front speakers, two rear, a center, and a subwoofer in a set. This is the traditional 5.1 channel sound system. If you add two side speakers, that's a 7.1 channel system.

Get a Receiver with Enough Channels for Your Speaker System

There are other pieces of equipment you have to consider if you're going to be getting a speaker package (or if you're trying to leave your options open to expand to 5.1 channel or 7.1 channel someday). You have to get a receiver with that many channels, which may well be an expensive upgrade from the receiver you have now--you would expect to pay several hundred dollars to go from a two channel receiver to a 5.1 or 7.1. Also budget in the cost of all the cables you'll need to run around your room, and perhaps a wall plate to help keep everything neat and organized.
