A number of people are unfamiliar with the specific duties of supply chain jobs. The analysts, accountants, engineers, and buyers who work in this industry oversee, design, and analyze the ways in which inventory is handled, parcels are manufactured, and items are shipped. Their ultimate goal is to come up with ways to improve efficiency while cutting costs related to shipping, assembly, storage, and distribution.

Supply chain jobs may call on workers to manage day-to-day budgets and report directly to the company's CFO. By uncovering bottlenecks in the supply chain, employees can figure out where and how resources ought to be allocated to get materials where they need to be. They're also charged with calculating how much the current supply chain system costs to operate. As many companies have international distribution agreements, the fees associated with moving items about the globe can be enormous.

Qualifications for Supply Chain Jobs

Some of the best candidates for supply chain jobs are MBAs who have the right combination of theoretical knowledge and proven success in the workplace. For this reason, those grads who have spent some time in management jobs prior to receiving their degrees may enjoy greater consideration. Many of these positions look for applicants with purchasing credentials as well as their CPM or APICS. In lieu of these, an inventory certification will usually suffice.

If you've had enough of accounting and finance jobs and are seeking a change, it may be worth considering supply chain jobs, especially if you have strong analytical skills. The emphasis here is more on problem solving than accounting or financing per se, but many of the assets that have served you in your accounting jobs will prove handy. A strong emphasis is also placed on communication skills, as supply chain analysts must report their findings to CEOs, CFOs, and boards of directors.
