These days, teacher development has become a hot topic in the field of education. With increasing frequency, researchers, administrators, and educators are recognizing that quality instruction stems from ongoing training and mentoring. Such training is designed to improve the quality of student instruction as well as the potential for professional advancement for teachers.

Teacher development can focus on any number of things, from choosing an instructional style to promoting professional advancement. In recent years, the subject of teacher training has taken the fore, with educators and administrators attempting to determine which certification approaches produce the most effective teachers. Although debate continues as to which training methods are most successful, most people agree on a few central principles.

Features of Effective Teacher Development

Perhaps the main point on which people agree is that teacher development is an ongoing process. Education is lifelong pursuit, and this is certainly true of learning to teach. With this in mind, teachers should be prepared to seek instruction across the course of their careers. Their needs will change, but the fundamental need for consultation and collaboration will not.

Along these lines, development programs should be designed to address the needs of instructors with differing levels of experience. They should serve everyone from the novice instructor to the retiree, by providing the latest scientific findings and program suggestions. Moreover, in keeping with the interactive spirit of the classroom, they should allow for mentoring and collaboration among participants.
