Dance Mixes

In my opinion, dancing to electronic music is one of the great joys in life. No other type of music is so geared towards making you move than electronic dance music. Over the past two decades, DJs have experimented and learned exactly how to play an audience--to get them out of their seats, to get them moving on the dance floor, and eventually to get them to throw their arms up in the air in ecstasy.

Regardless of which type of music you're dancing to (house, trance, techno, jungle), the key to a good night is a great mix. The DJ has to know how to put the songs together with emotional and logical reasoning. He can't crescendo too early, and he can't make you work so hard that you burn out before the end of the night. The art of the DJ is a mysterious (and often miraculous) science.

Listening to the Best DJs

Listening to the best dance music used to mean going to clubs that were hosting the best DJs. If you lived in a city you were lucky, if you didn't you'd have to either make a trip or try your best to get your hands on a bootleg mix. With the advent of the Internet, however, it's now possible to play mixes from (literally) the best DJs in the world--right at your own party.

The best DJs have for several years been releasing live recordings of some of their best performances. These sets (punctuated by the ecstatic yells of audience members) can be exhilarating, even if you weren't lucky enough to be there for the original performance. Artists like Paul Oakenfold and Paul Van Dyk have some amazing CDs that can really turn up the notch on your dance party.

If you're looking for great mixes by the best DJs, you can usually find them in any good music store, whether it's one in your town or on the Internet. I find Internet music sites to be particularly helpful, because they allow you to listen and compare different sets before you buy. In addition, they usually have user comments and ratings that can help you decide what to buy.

Making Your Own Mixes

If you're a professional DJ (or just an aspiring one), you'll probably want to get your own records so you can make your own amazing mixes. Again, one of the best ways to do this is to look for a dance music shop on the Internet. Good music websites will have all the latest (and classic) tracks organized by style and category, and will give you the ability to listen to everything before you buy.

Another great thing about online dance music stores is that they feature mixes by great DJs from around the world that you can recreate yourself. The best sites will have a list of songs specifically chosen by a particular DJ. You can then buy each record yourself, and recreate the mix at your own club or studio.

Looking through DJ mixes is also a fantastic way to learn about what's out there. Internet sites that feature mixes from DJs in different countries will give you an idea of what is popular and where, and it will help you stay on top of the dance music world. This is a great way to discover new tracks as soon as they come out, and to be reminded of classic tracks that you may not have spun in awhile.
