Educational Games

No one said that children have to stop learning once they come home from school. The problem is that it may be difficult to get them to want to learn after they have been sitting in a classroom for a significant portion of the day. Educational games can be helpful in this regard, as they blur the line between education and entertainment by making education much more fun and enjoyable.

Using Educational Games to Learn

Educational games can be as simple as putting common types of problems in different contexts. For example, rather than asking "What is 8+2?" a game might have players assist in completing a grocery list. Other games may take common video game scenarios such as shooting aliens, and replace the aliens with numbers so that they objective is to "shoot" the proper numbers to complete a problem.

These games do not just have to deal with mathematics--educational games can help impart basic skills such as reading and spelling. Children can read along with the words on the screen as they are highlighted. This can make the difficult task of learning how to read more enjoyable, as children can practice reading while being told a story simultaneously.

Educational games can help give children a head start on topics that they have not yet approached in school. They can also be used to supplement what they are currently learning. If a teacher has informed you that your child is having difficulty with a particular subject, educational games can be the easiest avenue through which you can approach the subject with your child.
