International music may be the next frontier for any person who lists "music" among their likes or passions. After all, to say that you truly love music, you cannot mean just old-style American country any more than you can mean Armenian liturgical music. Sampling international music is a rewarding enterprise and a must for anyone who claims to love music.

Finding International Music

If you go to your local CD store, however, you are not likely to find a comprehensive selection of international music, much less any information to help you arrow in on something that you would like. You can't listen to anything before you buy it, and rarely will a person working at the store be of much help in terms of describing a specific CD or artists with whom they are not familiar. Thus, the Internet has rapidly become the best place to find out about and purchase international music.

It has been said that music is a common language among men, and sometimes, without a doubt, this is true. If we hear lyrics in a foreign language, we can still get the idea of what a song is about from the style of music and the tone of the singer's voice. And instrumental music--classical and traditional--is probably the greatest proof that all over the world, through thousands of years, man has independently had the urge to create music as a form of expression and can connect through that shared drive.

While the artist's impetus to create music as a mode of self expression is universal among cultures, specific elements of international music differ greatly among cultures. In some case, the tonal systems are entirely different, and in others, the tone of the instruments is initially uncomfortable for our ears. Sometimes it is a classroom environment that is best structured for the kind of patience and guided listening that will help people access what is beautiful about international music so they can include it in their own love of music.
