Rare DVD movies are often impossible to find in a store near you, but can be acquired with ease on the Internet. Unfortunately in some cases with rare older films, they are not available on DVD at all, but you can look for them on VHS. With movies that have been released on DVD, however, you should be able to find them if you know where to look.

Foreign rare DVD movies may not be available through any American distributors. If a film was well-known due to a film festival or award, it may have been picked up by an American distributor, which would mean you could order it through a neighborhood video store even if the store didn't keep a copy in stock. Some rare DVD movies are documentaries which have become dated, but might still have interest for classroom or academic purposes.
