Getting any credit card is a big step, one that all too many of us don't think about enough. This is, unfortunately, especially true of people who can't afford credit or who don't know how to manage it. There are some important factors to consider whenever you're applying for a credit card, whether it's a bank card, an expensive credit card, or even a quality card such as Discover.

Avoid Credit Problems

If you want to get your first card to use only for emergencies, it's important to consider the circumstances under which you might use your card inappropriately. For example, replacing your car's alternator would be a good use of an emergency credit card. A new CD player would not. One of the worst ways to run into a problem with a credit card is to make a lot of small purchases, convincing yourself that you would still have enough of a balance if you need to visit a doctor.

On the other hand, if you carefully select a card that has the features you want and are very conservative about using it, knowing that you will have credit when you need it can really give you peace of mind. You might want to consider a card that offers you cash back whenever you make a purchase, especially if your expenditure is related to a real emergency. One such card that many people swear by is Discover, and now you can apply for Discover credit cards online.

Before you get a Discover credit card or any other card online, have a plan in place. If you are a compulsive buyer, you might want to leave your credit card at home in a safe place instead of carrying it with you all the time. At the very least, you might want to lock it in your glove compartment so that you can use it if you need it but will have to think about it first. Using common sense can make all the difference in the world when it comes to establishing and keeping good credit, and the end result will be that you will remain in control and have access to the credit you need.
