Credit Card DebtWritten by Jill Morrison
Credit card debt is the most common form of debt among Americans. There are many ways to get into credit card debt and it usually begins happening at a young age. After graduating from high school, many students fall into the trap of using credit cards to cover a multitude of their post-high school or college expenses. These students are usually eager to be on their own and to make their own choices about financial matters. Others need credit cards to pay for books, rent, and other living expenses and figure that they'll pay it off later.
After acquiring a few credit cards, it is very easy to begin spending, regardless of age. Unfortunately, due to high interest rates, debt on credit cards can add up quickly and by the time it is realized, it is often too late. A reasonable amount of debt has become unmanageable. Over-charging on credit cards is not the only way that people get into credit card debt. Debt can also start with accidentally missing payments or only paying the minimum amounts for several months.
Avoiding Credit Card Debt
The best way to avoid credit card debt is by not having any credit cards to use. You may choose to simply use a debit card for all necessary purchases. Then, payments will automatically be deducted from your account. If you do choose to use credit cards, you should be sure that you can afford to pay for any purchase where these credit cards are used. You must also pay off credit card balances on time to avoid further penalties.
Prioritizing is an important part of managing finances. It is acceptable to occasionally splurge on going out to dinners or material things, but they should not take precedence over necessities. It is very important to pay all bills on time and to set aside enough money for necessary living expenses. If you do, however, fall into credit card debt, you should rationally consider your options and take active steps in eliminating your debt. Debt settlements are often the best option for solving large credit card debt problems.
