Generally, you will have to pay a fee, but some you don't. If the company asks for a fee, this does not mean they are trying to rip you off. If, however, the fee seems to be quite high to you, you might want to look around or check out the company with the Better Business Bureau.

Also, be wary of any debt consolidation companies that say they can erase the bad marks on your credit history and make them better. Even if you have good marks, if you are looking at a company that offers this, I suggest running the other way. It is impossible to make your credit excellent in one fowl swoop. You can make it better, but this takes time. You have to pay your bills on time and not have a lot of loans out.
