Online BudgetsWritten by Sarah Provost Online budgets are marvelous tools for taking and keeping control of your personal finances. Though almost everyone knows the basic idea of budgeting, online budgets can help you fine-tune the process. With an online budget, the tedium of calculations is removed, and you are also prompted to enter expenses you might otherwise have overlooked. Setting up an online budget takes a little time and effort, but once you've got the template filled in, everything after that becomes a whole lot easier. Some online budgets are even linked to your bank accounts and credit cards, so that you don't even have to enter your expenses--the program does it for you. All you have to do is enter cash purchases. Making the Best Use of Online BudgetsThe most important element in creating any budget is accuracy. If you don't have a clear picture of where you're spending your money--and most people don't--you have very little chance of keeping your finances under control. It's especially easy to forget to budget expenses that recur less frequently than once a month. Your online budget should prompt you for these and other easily forgotten categories, such as pet care and gifts. Online budgets also help you clarify your priorities. With the help of these programs, it's easier to use multiple subcategories. Maybe you consistently go over your "entertainment" budget. By breaking it down into subcategories such as movies, concerts, travel, giving parties, skiing or whatever you might do, you can see where your money is going. You might decide, for instance, to forego a concert or two in order to buy a season pass at your local ski area. The more information you have, the more power you have over your finances and your life.
