In order to accept credit cards online, you'll need to select the ecommerce solution provider that best matches your needs. For many Internet retailers, using a shopping cart program on their site is the best way to get all of the pertinent data from their customers. Whether you choose to process the information yourself, or have a real time gateway handle it, is up to you.

How a Shopping Cart Works

A shopping cart is really the graphical interface that acts as a virtual storekeeper to your customers. If you want to accept credit cards online, you'll need to project a feeling of legitimacy before any customers will hand over sensitive information. For this reason, using only secure, encrypted programs is imperative.

Through a shopping cart, a customer can enter what product they want, specifying size, quantity, color, shipping mode, and so on. They will also act as a sales register, computing the subtotal and total payment amounts. The ones that aren't tied to real time gateway systems will then email the order information to you for processing.

When you use these shopping carts in conjunction with a real time system, the information goes instead directly to the credit card companies for authorization. After this, you'll receive an email that tells you that everything is ready for order processing, and you simply fill the order and mail it out. In either case, you can rest assured that the customer's needs have been thoroughly communicated, and will be met adequately.
