Coin collectors all over the world and particularly in the United States are often intrigued with the beauty and history of American silver dollars. Even today, the fairly new American Eagle Silver Dollar is the most popular collectible coin of its type in the world. Silver lovers can enjoy these coins in sets, including Morgan silver dollars minted from 1878 to 1921.

The history of silver dollars in the United States is very interesting. For example, the Morgan dollars were minted at the behest of Western silver mine owners who were desperate to stabilize the silver market at the end of the 19th century. They believed that the government purchase of enough silver to mint a new coin would have a beneficial effect on their finances. Unfortunately, a few years later, minting the coins was interrupted as the price of silver dropped.

Peace Dollars

The first Peace dollars were minted in 1921, the same year the Morgans were discontinued. Peace dollars were intended to commemorate the end of the World War, but they were only minted for a few years. Later, as the price of silver rose, the US government decreed that silver dollars could be melted down into bars for sale abroad. Today, the remaining dollars are prized collectibles, especially the Morgan dollars that are tied to the development of the Old West.

You can find American silver dollars online at a variety of sites. Many vendors offer these beautifully crafted dollars in sets. The price, in general, is based on condition, year minted, and, in some cases, where the coins were minted. You will also be able to find coin guides online. These are lists of coins and their current market values. They often show a photo of the coins and explain the cost differences between circulated and uncirculated coins. When you're ready to buy or sell silver dollars, compare prices at several sites.
