Rum Sales

Rum sales rose more than five percent in 2003. The impressive boost in rum sales last year is due in large part to the introduction of flavored rums, such as Bacardi's vanilla, chocolate and raspberry flavored rums. These alcoholic beverages are rarely served by themselves.

Rather, flavored rums are usually used as the base for tropical cocktails. Spectacular rum sales are due in part to the rise of the Cuban mojito. The mojito is a delicious, minty drink which caught on big a few years ago, and whose popularity seems only to be growing. The mojito, which is made of light rum, simple syrup, and crushed mint leaves, has become an increasingly popular figure at barbecues, brunches, and parties.

Rum Sales and the Top-Selling Rums

Two companies dominate the world of rum. Bacardi is the number one company, and Captain Morgan comes in at number two. Malibu is third, though a distant third at that.

Rum is similar to vodka, in that it can be mixed into a tremendous number of drinks. Versatility explains the success of rum and vodka sales. Rum is an important ingredient in everything from mojitos, to Long Island Iced Teas, to daiquiris.
