Sugar free chocolate candies are perfect for people watching sugar, calories, or carbohydrates in their diets, but still want to enjoy the taste of chocolate. Generally, the sweetener maltitol gives the candies their sweetness, but without the disadvantages of sugar. In fact, Maltitol has a number of benefits other than sweetening sugarless products, such as calorie reduction.

It seems today that just about everyone has a food allergy or dietary restriction, and food producers try to accommodate as many of these as possible. One serious ailment, diabetes (as well as other conditions) is directly affected by sugar; diabetics must constantly monitor what they eat and drink. Luckily, sugar free chocolate candies are allowed on their list of acceptable foods.

How Sweet Are Sugar Free Chocolate Candies?

Chocolates sweetened with maltitol are just about as sweet as ones containing sugar; maltitol is 90% as sweet as pure sugar and has a very similar taste. And that's just the beginning of the good news: since maltitol has about 2.1 calories per gram compared to sugar's 4 calories per gram, sugar free candies have fewer calories--and carbohydrates--than those sweetened with sugar. That's great news for diabetics and carbo counters.

What's the catch then? None, really. Sugar free chocolates and other confections using maltitol are becoming more and more popular as food specialists continue to find ways to produce foods with lower fat, sugar, and caloric levels and without preservatives. It's a great time to be a fan of sugar free chocolate candies.
