When planning a party or a gathering, it is often very tempting to include caviar on the menu. While many people are familiar with eating caviar, they may feel slightly overwhelmed when determining the best way to serve it. There are a few things to keep in mind when dealing with caviar which will ensure that your guests enjoy every mouthful.

Tips for Serving Caviar

The first step is choosing how to serve your caviar. One of the nicest presentations of caviar is a pre-made canapé. Canapés can be made with various types of bread and garnishes. Hard-boiled eggs, chopped onions or crème fraiche are some of the more popular accompaniments. Canapés can be served prior to your meal or set up as part of an elegant buffet.

Caviar can also be presented in a special caviar service. Services can be made of glass or crystal, and often come with matching serving spoons. In this way, caviar can be served unaccompanied or with various traditional sides such as blini and sour cream. Guests can pass the service around the table or multiple services can be set up to accommodate everyone.

The second step is determining how much caviar to purchase for your dinner guests. If you are having an intimate gathering, think about how many of your invitees will eat the caviar. If you know that one or two are not partial to seafood, you can safely count them out of the equation. If you are serving caviar unaccompanied, it is safe to assume that each guest will consume about one-half of an ounce of caviar. If you are serving caviar as a canapé, one ounce will likely make eight or nine appetizers. Before heading to the store, take the time to research different brands and prices. This will keep you from spending more than is necessary for your dinner party.
