Kosher GiftWritten by Patricia Skinner Although kosher food is increasingly available in food stores generally, it is still quite difficult to find stores that actually specialize in kosher food. It is particularly difficult to find kosher food stores online, although buying online is the most convenient way to shop for so many of us nowadays. Food has always been a central theme in Jewish life, and kosher food baskets are the ideal gift for Jewish people everywhere. When you give such a gift, however, you need assurances that not only does the food you're giving comply with all kosher laws, but that it is delicious and worthy of being given as a gift as well. Kosher food specialties are often very special indeed, and likely to become popular even with non-Jews once they are discovered. So what kind of foods might you find in a kosher food store? Special Kosher Food GiftsTo begin with, there will be a selection of special foods for each holiday, such as the unleavened bread products that can be found around the time of Passover. It is traditional to give food baskets during Purim, and these will contain a selection of goodies, particularly kosher chocolate and sweets. Rosh Hashanah, which is the Jewish New Year, is another time when a wide variety of sweets are given as gifts. To begin the new year, sweets made with honey are especially popular. Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, is one of the most important Jewish festivals of all. Gifts of food are often given at this time to reconcile differences with loved ones and friends. During Chanukah the menorah, which holds nine candles, is lit to represent the days that the menorah originally burned in the temple.
