Stanchions

Stanchions are freestanding poles or posts. For the purpose of crowd control, multiple stanchions are connected by ropes or retractable belts to indicate line formations, product displays and off-limits areas. Although some stanchions are permanently bolted to floor surfaces, most are made to be portable and easy to store away when not needed.

The importance of crowd control cannot be under-emphasized in a frequented public facility. Despite the aggressive pretense that the term "crowd control" tends to suggest, the idea is to provide a safer, more risk-free environment for shared public spaces. With more manageable crowds, small disturbances can be taken care of quickly and without difficulty.

The Varieties of Stanchions

For optimal convenience and mobility, stanchions with built-in retractable belts may be your best option. Since the belts are integrated into the design of the stanchion, no extra parts are needed. In addition, each stanchion has a belt clip for other belts to hook onto. Universal belt clips are especially helpful if different types of stanchions need to be combined. Some models may have a dual-belt design to keep younger children within the limits of the belts, and to discourage individuals from ducking under the belts.

Stanchions might also be made of a more economical plastic post and chain, for areas that don't need heavy crowd control. For a more classic, old-fashioned aesthetic, polished brass or chrome posts can be used with ropes to connect each unit. Stanchions are available that meet American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. ADA regulations state that belts cannot be higher than 27 inches, so as to provide hazard detection for sight-impaired individuals.
